Why print size matters for QR codes

A QR code that looks fine on screen can fail in the real world if it is too small for the scanning distance, printed with low resolution, or crowded with too much data. Cameras need enough pixels across each module to distinguish dark modules from the background.

This calculator uses a common industry rule of thumb—minimum symbol width roughly one tenth of the viewing distance (same units)—then adjusts for higher-density payloads. You also get a pixel size at your chosen DPI so your design file matches the physical output.

What affects minimum size (beyond distance)

Amount of data

URLs, WiFi strings, and vCards create more modules than a short static link. Higher version symbols need more physical area for the same module width.

Print quality & DPI

Low-resolution raster images blur module edges. Aim for vector QR output (SVG) or high-DPI PNG from our generator when possible.

Error correction & logos

Embedded logos and higher error correction increase pattern complexity. If you added branding inside the code, print slightly larger than the bare minimum.

Environment & lighting

Outdoor glare, tinted windows, and dim interiors make scanning harder. Extra size and strong contrast both help.

How we calculate the recommendation

We start from the widely used rule that the printed QR code’s width or height should be at least about one tenth of the expected scanning distance (using the same unit system). That relationship keeps enough angular size on the camera sensor for typical smartphone optics. We then multiply by a small factor when you indicate a denser payload, because more data reduces module size for a given print dimension. The module estimate assumes roughly 29 modules per side as a middle-ground reference—your actual symbol may differ by version.

What is the minimum QR code size for print?

There is no single ISO number for every case—it depends on scanning distance, data volume, and print quality. Our calculator encodes the common “tenth of the distance” heuristic plus a density adjustment. For business cards, many designs use at least about 2 cm square for typical URL payloads when scanned at arm’s length.

How do I convert QR size to pixels for print?

Enter your target DPI (300 DPI is typical for quality offset and digital print). We compute pixel width as (size in inches) × DPI. The result is the minimum square pixel dimension to hold the QR at the recommended physical size.

Does a bigger QR code always scan better?

Up to a point, yes—larger modules are easier for the camera to resolve. Extremely large codes on small labels can waste space and hurt layout, so balance aesthetics with the distance rule and always test a physical proof.

Why does my dense QR need more space?

More characters mean more modules in the grid. If the physical size stays the same, each module shrinks. The calculator bumps the recommended minimum size so modules stay wide enough to scan.
